Categories let you group your subscriptions by type so you can see where your recurring spend is concentrated. Once you assign categories, SubLedger breaks your monthly and yearly totals down by group — making it easy to spot, for example, that you’re spending more on software tools than you realized.

Available categories

SubLedger includes the following built-in categories:
  • Streaming — video, music, and podcast services
  • Utilities — internet, phone, electricity, and similar essential services
  • Software — productivity tools, developer tools, and SaaS apps
  • News & media — publications, newsletters, and content subscriptions
  • Health & fitness — gym memberships, wellness apps, and fitness platforms
  • Finance — budgeting tools, investment platforms, and financial services
  • Gaming — game subscriptions and online gaming services
  • Other — anything that doesn’t fit the above

How to assign a category

1

Open the subscription

From your dashboard, click the name of the subscription you want to categorize.
2

Select a category

In the detail panel, click the Category field and choose one from the dropdown list.
3

Save

Click Save. The category appears on the subscription card in your list and is reflected immediately in your spend breakdown.

How to change a category

Follow the same steps as assigning — open the subscription, click the Category field, choose a different option, and save. There’s no limit to how many times you can change a category.

How categories affect your spend view

Your dashboard Spend summary groups totals by category. For each group you’ll see:
  • The number of active subscriptions in that category
  • Your monthly cost for the group
  • Your projected yearly cost for the group
Assigning categories to all your subscriptions gives you the most useful spend breakdown. Uncategorized subscriptions are grouped under Other in your summary.
Categories are for your own reference — SubLedger does not share category data with third parties.
